Substance Misuse Training Course

The ASET Certificate in Responding to Substance Misuse training course by People in Vision is accredited at Level 3.

This course is aimed at those with a professional or a personal interest in the deeper issues of substance misuse, in particular those who work directly with users.

Substance Misuse Training:

The Certificate in Responding to Substance Misuse will enable learners to gain a deeper understanding of issues related to substance misuse, social effects, health and the various responses and interventions.

Learning Approach / Cost:
Choice of three formats:
Substance Misuse training: correspondence learning: £299 per student
Substance Misuse training: distance learning in groups with a local tutor: £349 per student
Substance Misuse training: group tutorials: Price dependent on requirements

Who Benefits:
The Certificate in Responding to Substance Misuse is largely aimed at those who work directly and regularly with users, which is therefore an excellent training for professionals with a substance misuse function or those who would like to pursue a career as such.

This course in particular is widely used to support such professionals in achieving their DANOS competences, also providing comprehensive 'underpinning knowledge' for the (SVQ) NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care. This includes drugs workers, counsellors, outreach workers, volunteers, nurses, social workers, police and prison officers.

7 Modules:
Symptoms, Effects and Paraphernalia of Drug Use:
Recognising signs, symptoms and paraphernalia. Drug set and setting
The Law; Responses to Drug Use Including Harm Reduction and Interventions:
Drug legislation. Levels of drug use and associated problems (defining and assessing problems). Responding to drug use. Understanding harm reduction. Government strategy. Drugs services. Service standards. Cycle of change. Drug-related incidents requiring an immediate response
Drugs History; Drug Use and Facts; Attitudes and Values:
The history of drug use. Factors which influence drug use. Sources for more information about drugs. Awareness of why people use drugs. Terminology. Categories of drugs and their effects. Drug facts (various drugs and their categories, effects, associated problems and legislation). Attitudes and values
Volatile Substance Abuse:
Understanding VSA; including facts, concerns, methods, sudden deaths, substances. Responding to VSA; including likely users, legislation, education
Alcohol and Young People:
Young people's alcohol use; including concern, Government strategy, education. Effects and levels of alcohol use; including consequences, problems, responses. Attitudes by young people; including drink patterns, potential harm, responses
Drugs and Young People:
Understanding young people's attitudes and influencing factors. Effective communication with young people.
Drug Use and Blood-Borne Viruses:
Nature, extent and effects of blood-borne viruses. Transmission and prevention. Attitudes and values. Stereotyping. Discrimination. Testing and counselling
DANOS Standards:
The Certificate in Responding to Substance Misuse has been mapped to the DANOS standards. It helps people to develop their knowledge, skills and competence in the following DANOS units: AA1, AA3, AA4, AB2, AB5, AC1, AD1, AF2.

Further Development:
This course provides comprehensive 'underpinning knowledge' for the (SVQ) NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care.

DANOS - the Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards - specify the standards of performance that people in the drugs and alcohol field should be working to. They also describe the knowledge and skills workers need in order to perform to the required standard.
